Gary Lang will be speaking on Rainbow Fish at the next GVAC Meeting. The meeting will be held on April 10th at 7:00pm. For more Info check out the GVAC SITE
Grand Valley Aquarium Club

Gary has been keeping fish since he was 10 and has been associated with the organized hobby for the last 28 years. He is a member of the Missouri Aquarium Society (MASI) and has held various positions in the club. He is a grand master breeder in MASI, and has won "Best Fish In Show" on four different occasions, twice with rainbowfish.

In the fall of 1987 he started the Rainbowfish Study Group of North America (RSG). He got in fish photography mainly because there weren't many quality pictures of rainbowfish. He has had his photos published in FAMA, TFH and AFM and has published several articles for the Aquarium Fish Magazine and TFH.

In 2002 he imported eight new rainbowfish into North America from the world explorer, Heiko Bleher, including the Millennium rainbow, the Zigzag and the dwarf parva rainbowfish. In 2003 he made his second trip to Australia and did some more collecting while there. In 2005 he took the rainbowfish collectors dream trip - collecting in Papua, the western portion of New Guinea. He made another trip back in 2008 and brought back rainbowfish that have never been in the hobby before including Chilatherina alleni. He is currently running over 90 tanks and keeping over 65 species and locations of rainbowfish and blue-eyes.

Gary will be bringing fish if you are interested. Below you will find a list which you can pre-order from. This is going to be a very interesting talk. I hope to see many of you there. You can email Gary Lang to work out payment and to reserve your fish. gwlange@sbcglobal.net

Melanotaenia lacustris – ¾ to 1 inch unsexed 6 to a group for $6 each. Two groups available. You know what these look like.

Melanotaenia kamaka – ¾ to inch unsexed but getting close. Six fish to a group @ $6 each. Nice blue fish stays ~ 2.5 inches.
My linkMelanotaenia kamaka

Pseudomugil cf gertrudae Aru II’s – If you liked gertrudaes before you’ll love this fish with it’s elongated pelvic fins. Heiko collected this from the ARU islands. The colors aren’t fixed, some males have the top and the bottom of their tailed tipped in gold, others just a single dip. Some males have bright yellow long pelvic fins and others have long white ones. Can’t tell which female carries which trait and I haven’t found if they males breed true to color. Neat little fish though. $25/pair, 6 pairs available. Check the 1MG code too as it’s a different shot.

Chilatherina campsi – You don’t see these too often 1.25-1.5”, just starting to breed $15/pair 4 pair available.

Melanotaenia ANGFA – Another relatively small and unknown rainbowfish 1.25-1.5 inches, almost sexable. Six fish to a group at $6 each.

Chilatherina fasciata – Faowi Village 2005 collection – 1.5-2 inches $15/pair 6 pairs available. This collection has a lot more yellow in it than any other of the fasciatas that I’ve seen to date. I loved collecting this fish as the water was cool and clear to refresh us when the air around us was like a sauna! I look at this fish and remember the pain it took to bring it back but it's beauty makes it worth doing all over again and again.

Glossolepis pseudoincisus – This is Heiko’s Millennium rainbowfish. Males only, 7 available ~ 1.75” $6 each. They don’t get quite as big as the incisus and not nearly as aggressive.

Melanotaenia species “River Ifaupan” – DNA sequence suggests M. misoolensis but Heiko claims it’s different. ~ 1.75 inches unsexed (hard to sex). 6 to a group for $6 each. Three groups available.

Melanotaenia parkinsoni – orange variety – Unsexed 8 available at $6 each.

I have some of the European, yellow variety also. So far to me they don’t look very yellow but I saw the parents of my fish. $18/pr ~ 1.25 inches.

Melanotaenia trifasciata – Goyder River 1.5-2 inches, producing viable eggs. This particular variety doesn’t get quite as red as the fish shown in the photo but they still have a lot of great colors. Two pairs available at $18/pair. Three extra males available at $7 each.

Melanotaenia trifasciata – Pappin Creek – I was very happy to obtain this fish again on a trip to Germany this year. This is a big and very yellow Tri. 1.5-2 inches $18/pair Three pr available.

He brought and donated rainbow egg kits to the club to be auctioned off. It was a very nice talk. And I finally got a good start on my rainbow wish list too. I also was in desperate need of plants and got some very nice ones at their auction after.

Gary came in to Preuss today, let me tell you, it's odd being introduced to a guy who's been halfway round the world collecting animals, and being asked to educate HIM on a certain animal (in this case rabbit snails, which he picked up 2 of hehe)

he's a great guy, humble, and we had a couple of laughs...

Ha I never noticed this thread. Gary put on a great presentation. I almost wanted to go to the one in Sarnia, Ontario as well which wasn't too long ago. It was funny earlier in the day before going to the meeting and picking up fish from Gary I stopped in to Pruess quick and noticed a guy with a camera walking around who looked familiar. Rick mentioned who he was to me and introduced me to him. He had the fish I preordered from him out in his vehicle which really worked out much better than driving to GR to get them since I live right up the road from Pruess. I got them acclimated then headed to the GVAC meeting.

You know I really wanted to make more meetings and join the GVAC after meeting some cool people and buying nice auction items but the GVAC website hasn't been updated since Gary came. I keep looking at it hoping for updated info so I can head over to another meeting soon. I was hoping to see some of Gary's eggs hatched up for auction 8).
